Transfagarasan – the most amazing road in the world

Transfagarasan road goes over the highest part of the Southern Carpathians was in 2009 identified by the British television show Top Gear as the most amazing road in the world.

 

Transfagarasan road, also named as DN7C, was the megalomaniac project of Nikolae Ceausescu Government. 90 kilometres long road connects the historic regions of Transylvania and Wallachia and the cities of Sibiu and Pitesti. The road was built in the years from 1970 to 1974 and was built for strategic military purposes. According to official data about 40 soldiers were killed by accidents during construction.

 

The Transfagarasan road starts in Curtea de Arges and climbs the highest mountains in Romania, called Fagaras (Romanian Transylvanian Alps) up to an altitude of 2034 meters. It is a winding road with many hairpin turnings, steep and long S-curves and sharp descents.

 

Transfagarasan road has five tunnels, also the longest tunnel in Romania with 884 metres. The road is due to snow closed in winter usually from beginning of October to the end of June. Transfagarasan road is one of the famous tourist attractions of Romania as well as Dracula.
