Rotterdam is the second largest city in the Netherlands and it is also a large harbour, the largest in Europe and the world's second largest to Shanghai. The history of the city began in the 13th century when the dam on the river Rotte was built and created conditions for foundation of the city.
Rotterdam was nearly destroyed as the most important harbour after a series of heavy air raids during the second world war, and modern high-rise buildings were built in the city centre after the war.
