Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace is at the top of the must-see list of every tourist coming to London. Buckingham Palace is known as the official London seat of the British monarch, and also as the best place to watch Changing the Guard Ceremony.

It is noted that the first house that stood in this place was Lord Goring's House built in 1633. The centre of the current palace is formed by the house built for the Duke of Buckingham in 1703. King George III bought the Buckingham's House from his ancestor, Sir Charles Sheffield in 1762. In 1826 George III's son, George IV, entrusted the architect John Nash with its reconstruction so that the house could be used as a royal seat. This reconstruction gave the building the look that has been preserved till today. After the death of George IV in 1820 the rising costs for the Palace reconstruction put the new monarch under harsh criticism. That is why Wilhelm IV entrusted Edward Blor to continue the reconstruction and ensure a more moderate look.

Buckingham Palace became the main royal seat in 1837 on coronation of the Queen Victoria. The reconstruction completed after the Victoria and Albert wedding in 1840. The last major changes to the building were carried out under the reign of George V in 1913 when Sir Aston Webb modified the original facade built by Blor in 1850.

In 1999 Buckingham Palace had 19 state rooms, 52 sleeping rooms, 188 rooms for staff, 92 offices and 78 bathrooms. The West wing is open to public annually from August to September. Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and their art collections are not owned by the Queen, they are owned by the state.

Tourists can perceive Buckingham Palace as a grey and austere neoclacissist building with a garden that has Green Park from the North and St. James's Park from the East. For the British, however, it is of a great importance.
