Hostan Brewery in the historical center of Znojmo

Building of Hostan Brewery is situated on the forecastle of Znojmo Castle, right in the historical center of Znojmo. History of Hostan dates back to the Middle Ages when in1278 Rudolf of Habsburg confirmed right to brew beer for the town of Znojmo. Hostan name is derived from name of the first brewer and his name Hostan is mentioned in the records of the time of Charles IV.

Hostan Brewery in its present form, located in the historical center of Znojmo, was founded by Znojmo city in 1720 on the grounds around the castle rotunda of St. Catherine. Due to the building of the brewery lots of houses was demolished in front of the Znojmo Castle. The town Znojmo sold the brewery Hostan burgess Thomas Maural in 1860. His family owned the Hostan Brewery until 1921. In 1921 the brewery was renamed to the First Hostan Znojmo steam brewery and malt house limited company.

 

Hostan Brewery was nationalized after II World War, then remained in state ownership until privatization in 1993. In 2010 the town of Znojmo bought Hostan Brewery from Dutch group Heineken and brewery returned to the ownership of the town of Znojmo again.

 

Currently Hostan Brewery in Znojmo does not produce beer anymore, but brewery building in center of the town is one of the landmarks of the city Znojmo. Hostan stands next to the castle near the Rotunda of St. Catherine and form characteristic panorama of the historic center of Znojmo.
