Prague Astronomical Clock on Old Town Hall

Prague Astronomical Clock on the south side of the Old Town Hall Tower in Prague is nowadays great tourist attraction and is one of the most famous tourist sightseeing in Prague.

This is probably the best preserved medieval astronomical clock at all. The first mention of the the clock or medieval astronomical clock is refered to October 1410. The Prague Astronomical Clock was constructed in this year by clockmaker Mikulas of Kadan, probably with the help of John Ondrejovsky. John Ondrejovsky is known also as Master John Sindel, professor of philosophy, mathematics, astronomy and rector of Prague university.

Prague Astronomical Clock was amended by sculptures during the reconstruction of the Old Town Hall in the second half of the 15th century. At the same time the clock was adjusted by John Rose, known as Master Hanus. Just Master Hanus was in the past erroneously attributed the authorship of the Astronomical Clock. Later, the clock fell into disrepair and it was ruminated on cancelation of the clock in the 18th century. The rescue of the Prague Astronomical Clock was ensured by Antonin Strnad, Czech patriont and professor at Charles University in Prague. Under his supervision the Astronomical Clock was repaired by clockmaker Simon Landsperger in years 1787-1791.

During the next major repair in the years 1865 to 1866 the astronomical functions were launched. The clock was also equipped with a new calendar board with symbols of zodiac painted by Josef Manes. And statue of rooster with sound effect was placed there. Reconstruction replaced origin drive and the clock has began to show the correct time. Last reconstruction of the clock was passed in the autumn of 2005, sculptures and bottom of the circle made by Josef Manes were retouched during the reconstruction.

Astronomical Clock on Pregue Old Town Square is a unique monument and along with Charles Bridge and Prague Castle is one of the most popular sights of Prague.
