Charles Bridge, a connection between Old Town and Lesser Quarter, certainly adds to Prague's popularity. This most important gothic monument of the old Prague is among the best-preserved medieval bridges in Europe today.

The foundation stone of the Charles Bridge was laid in 1357. The reason for the construction was that the original Judith Bridge was destroyed by flood in 1342. Construction of a new bridge was held under the auspieces of the King Charles IV. and the bridge was finished in 1402. Name Charles Bridge started to be used around year 1870 thanks to the initiative of the writer Karel Havlicek Borovsky.
