Way through the Obří důl valley to the Sněžka mountain

The picturesque and giant valley called Obří důl, laying at the foot of the Sněžka mountain, has a glacial origin and thanks to it has got a "U" shape. The history of ore mining in the Obří důl valley dates back to 15th century. On its past refer several abandoned mines.

Origin of the Obří důl valley

Valley of the Obří důl was modeled by the Úpský giant glacier in the Ice Age, approximately 12 thousand years ago. This glacier reached the length of 4 km, was up to 810 meters high and has got a thickness of 100 meters. After his retreat, there remained a moraine mounds of accumulated material that the glacier, while its sagging tore, pushed in front of him and pressed of the sides.

Obří důl trail

We started our track to Sněžka mountain in the town of Pec pod Sněžkou, which is a well known centre of winter and summer tourism. From the parking spot we walked up the hill along the riverbed Úpa where we have passed several mountain huts with carefully prepared wood for winter season. According to a signpost the village Sedlo nad Obřím dolem was 4,5 km far away. Along our way there were beautiful views on the Obří důl valley, opposite rocky ridge, rolling waterfall in the distance and later on also on the Sněžka mountain.

Slowly walking and enjoying spectacular views, having several short breaks, we reached the village Sedlo nad Obřím dolem approximately within two hours. But it was not entirely a simple walk as it might have seem. Our feet had to manage a bit of steep climbing in the Obří důl valley. In the Sedlo nad Obřím dolem we were welcomed by the Slezský dům (Silesian House) and also by a lot of tourists who got the same idea as we did - spend autumn day by reaching the top of Sněžka mountain. Before the final climb on Sněžka mountain we gladly enjoyed the possibility of refreshment and also a view on the Obří důl valley.
