Tower in the Cesky Krumlov Castle

Cesky Krumlov is a picturesque historic town in South Bohemia, with unique Cesky Krumlov castle, which is after Prague Castle the second largest castle complex in the Czech Republic. The historic city center with its winding streets and large castle complex with the castle gardens and parks are desired attractions that each year bring throngs of tourists into Cesky Krumlov. The entire complex has been inscribed on the UNESCO list since 1992.

 

Cesky Krumlov Castle is clearly visible and recognizable thanks to its distinctive tower. Cylindrical six-storey tower is a symbol of Cesky Krumlov and it´s also an expression of its rich history and beauty. Oldest lower part of the tower with ground floor and the first floor was built in the 13th century, as well as the adjacent wing.

 

The tower was completed in its present form in 1581 in accordance to project designed by Baldassare Maggi of Arogne. Subsequently, decoration of the tower and Hradek was completed in 1590 by painter Bartholomew Beránek – Jelinek. The tower underwent major repairs in 1947. Later, in 1994-1996, there was another large reconstruction of the tower. During the reconstruction the painting of the tower were also restored.

 

Nowadays the tower of the Cesky Krumlov Castle is open to the public. The tower offers beautiful views of the Cesky Krumlov and its surroundings from the gallery. Of course, it is necessary to climb many stairs to the top.
