Grand Place in Brussels

Grand Place in Brussels

For tourists, Brussels is mostly not so popular as Paris or Rome. Some tourists even override tourist potential of the city. And that's a shame. Brussels is considered the capital of Europe and despite its relatively small size, there is a lot to see. And it's not just about Belgian chocolates or Brussels fries known as local specialties. Area of Brussels is approximately 161 square kilometers, that is 3 times less than the area of Prague, for example, but atmosphere of the town is unique.

One of those magical places is the Grand Place Square or Grote Mark known as the historic heart of Brussels. It is considered one of the most beautiful squares in the world. The square is since 1998 the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Attractive gothic town hall from the 15th century dominates the Grande Place Square. Town Hall tower is 96 meters high. The statue of St. Michael, the patron of Brussels, is situated on the top of the hall. Origin houses on the Grand Place Square were built of wood. However, almost all houses were destroyed by gunfire of French troops commanded by Marshal François de Villeroye in 13th of August 1695. Town hall tower and several stone walls escaped destruction only. Guild houses in the square were built in the next years again, that time in stone. Although the front of each house has different forms together it is architecturally harmonious complex. Historic buildings surrounding the square look really fabulous especially in the dark.

You can see floral carpet called Tapis de Fleurs on the Grande Place Square every two years. Other notable historic places located in Brussels include the Royal Palace, shopping arcade St. Hubert or Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula. The statue of Manneken Pis, the symbol of Brussels, is located short walk from Grand Place.
