Schönbrunn, a summer residence of the Austro-Hungarian emperors

Katterburg, the location of the current Schönbrunn Palace, was acquired by the Emperor Maximilian II. It was also favoured by his son, the Emperor Matthias, and the historic castle was rebuilt to a hunting-seat in 1569. The hunting-seat was unfortunately destroyed by the Turks in 1683, and in 1695, the Emperor Leopold I entrusted the main architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach with plans for a new palace to overshadow Versailles.

Due to the costly wars at that time the original Schönbrunn project was deemed too expensive and the emperor agreed to a more modest variant. The construction commenced in 1696 and when Leopold I died in 1705, the palace, for the most part, was not finished. The Schönbrunn Palace was a favourite place of the Empress Sisi. At that time it was located near Vienna. With Vienna growing over the time, it has become part of Vienna.

The Schönbrunn Palace became the summer residence of the Austrian emperors. You can find ostentatious representative halls here decorated in the rococo style, which include the Bohemia crystal glass chandeliers and tile stoves. Among the most known halls there are Mirror Hall (Spiegelsaal), where six years old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart played, China Oval Cabinet, where Marie Theresa arranged secret conferences with the state chancellor earl Kounic and Vieux-Lacque Room, which was used by Napoleon. The Million Room (Millionenzimmer) is probably the most beautiful rococo room in the palace. It is incrusted with rosewood and precious miniatures from India and Persia. Basic entrance fee for the Imperial Tour is €9.50 and for the Grand Tour €12.90. The Imperial Tour includes a tour of the 22 rooms, the Grand Tour includes a tour of all 40 rooms.

The summer residence of the Austria-Hungarian emperors Schönbrunn Palace is a must see for every visitor of Vienna.
