Completed in 1931, Empire State Building is one of the most world's most iconic landmarks, once the tallest building in New York City (now 9th tallest in the world), and has appeared in more than 90 movies including King Kong and Annie Hall. A primary piece of the NYC skyline, the building stands over 1454 feet tall with an impressive 102 stories. The Empire State Building also earned the name of the 7th wonder of the world (via American Society of Civil Engineers).

First and foremost, every visit to New York should include checking out the Empire State Building's 86th and 102nd floor observation decks which provide remarkable 360° views of the city and beyond. While the 102nd floor observation deck isn't open air (the 86th floor is) it gives you the most extensive views of NYC including Central Park and the city's bridges.

The Lights

 

Since 1976 the Empire State Building’s has dazzled the city's skyline thanks to its tower lights which have faithfully kept to their tradition of changing color to celebrate a variety of special occasions, holidays and organizations all year long. Then in 2012, everything changed when new owners installed a state of the art computer powered LED light system. This new lighting system is able to display approximately 16 million colors, all that can change instantaneously. The building’s dazzling light shows are legendary, celebrating holidays and special events along with synchronized music.

 

The Restaurants and Shops

 

Adding even more to the Empire State Building experience, there are a number of shops, cafes and restaurants located in the building's main lobby area including the STATE Grill and bar which is one of the most popular restaurants in New York. The restaurant updates the menu daily, showcasing the fresh local flavors of New York farmers, winemakers and brewers. There are also additional family friendly restaurants in the building and everyone's favorite coffee shop; Starbucks.

Because it's located in the center of iconic Midtown Manhattan, it's easy to get around when you begin your exploration of New York City from the Empire State Building because most of the best sites are within walking distance. Just 5 to 15 minutes away you'll have easy access to locations that include Herald Square, Macys, Madison Square Garden and Park, Bryant Park, the theater district and Time Square.
